Orange County Blacksmith Guild

King Richard

This story has been passed down by blacksmiths for many years.

Richard was King of England in the late twelfth century.
He had a huge castle and a huge staff to keep it running.

One day he decided to have a dinner in the main hall in honor of his staff, just to show his appreciation of their work.
They were all seated around a large round table, enjoying themselves.

King Richard stood up tapping his mug to get everyone’s attention.
“I would like to know which of you is the most important person on my staff”

The knight stood up and proudly raised his sword.
“I must be the most important person. I just slayed the feared dragon and saved all of your lives.”

The cook looked over at the knight and smiled. He stood up with pride.
“I’m the most important person in the castle. I prepare all the food you eat, Without me, you would all starve.”

The tailor seemed angry with these comments. He stood up and told the staff,
“I am the one that makes the clothing you wear. Without me, you would all be sitting here naked.”

The Blacksmith looked all around the table, stood up, and said,
“Sir Knight, you did slay the dragon, but with a sword made by me. You were also protected by the armor I forged.
.
“Cook, you have created a wonderful meal for us today. The pots and pans you cooked with and knives you used to carve our meat were all done by my skilled hands. I even made the utensils you all use to enjoy this meal.”

Tailor, the clothing made by you is very much appreciated. It would not have happened, but, for the sewing needles I produced

The Blacksmith them smiled and sat to more enjoy his meal.
